Mara Revkin '09 has been named a junior fellow by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for 2010-2011. The fellowship is awarded to just eight to 10 individuals annually; approximately five percent of applicants receive the award.

Revkin is currently in Oman studying the use of poetry as a form of public expression for women. She developed an interest in how poetry facilitates dialogue between ideologically diverse groups in the Middle East while studying abroad in Egypt as an undergraduate. At Swarthmore, Revkin was an Honors major in political science with minors in sociology/anthropology and Arabic. She is also a former editor-in-chief of The Phoenix, and she was a member of Swarthmore's varsity women's soccer team.

As a Carnegie Junior Fellow, Revkin will work as research assistant to the Endowment's senior associates whose work is focused on Middle East Studies. Fellows typically have opportunities to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, and to contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, journalists, and government officials.
