Men's Tennis Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

Zac Rodd '06 (above) won at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles to lead Swarthmore past seventh-ranked Mary Washington 4-2 on Sunday.

Swarthmore senior Zac Rodd, ranked fifth in the Atlantic South region, defeated Mary Washington senior Paul Bristow, ranked second in the region, at No. 1 singles to send the 20th-ranked Garnet to a 4-2 victory over the seventh-ranked Eagles in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Division III Tennis Championships on Sunday afternoon.

The Garnet avenged a 6-1 loss to the Eagles on April 2 and, more importantly, a 4-1 home loss to MWU in the second round of last year's NCAA Championship.

Swarthmore (8-10) advances to the NCAA National Championship quarterfinals on May 17 to be held at the University of Mary Washington.  It is the first quarterfinal appearance by the Garnet since the brackets were expanded in the early 1990s, the last coming in 1991.
