Goldwater Scholarships Awarded to
Eric Astor '09 and Jeremy Freeman '08
Eric Astor '09 of Middletown, N.J., and Jeremy Freeman '08 of Buffalo, N.Y., have been named Goldwater Scholars for 2007. As recipients of the scholarship, they will receive up to $7,500 per year toward their undergraduate expenses. Both were selected for the award, named for Senator Barry M. Goldwater, on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
 Eric Astor '09 | Astor, a double major in physics and honors mathematics, is the son of Stacey Prager and Andrew Astor, and is a 2005 graduate of the Ranney School in Tinton Falls. He is the president of Free Culture Swarthmore, a chapter of a national student organization advocating creative expression and copyright reform. He is also a member of Cantatrix, an early music a cappella group, as well as the Swarthmore College Chorus. |
 Jeremy Freeman '08 | Freeman, an honors cognitive science major, is the son of Elizabeth Mensch and the late Alan Freeman, and is a 2004 graduate of the Park School. At Swarthmore, Freeman researches motion perception with Frank Durgin, professor and chair of psychology. He spent last summer at N.Y.U.'s Center for Neural Science studying object recognition with Denis Pelli, professor of psychology and neural science, and will return this summer to use neuroimaging to study attention and perceptual awareness with David Heeger, also a professor of psychology and neural science. Freeman has also served as a peer mentor on students' writing assignments for biology courses as part of Swarthmore's Writing Associates Program for two years. |
