Chester Children's Gamelan Project

Tom Whitman teaches Chester schoolchildren about gamelan instruments in Lang Concert Hall.

Sponsored by the Lang Center for Social Responsibility and the Office of the President of Swarthmore College, the Chester Children's Gamelan project introduces young children from Chester, Pennsylvania to the rich performing arts traditions of Bali, Indonesia. Student and faculty volunteers from Swarthmore College teach children to play Gamelan Angklung, a small percussion ensemble. The instruments were made by I Wayan Berata, a master instrument maker in Denpasar, Bali. In 2016-17 the program is located at the Chester Charter School for the Arts.  Previous community partners were Stetser Elementary School and Chester Community Charter School.

Prospective volunteers who would like to participate as teachers in the program should contact Tom Whitman.
