Children are often depicted as symbols of innocence, peace, and international friendship. As the representatives of the next generation, children have been viewed as the perfect recipients for new ideas on how to stop war and suffering. They are seen as ideal ambassadors from one culture to another in the cause for international understanding. Many groups have recognized that children are often the most vulnerable to war, brutality, and violence, and have sought to utilize children’s abilities as peacemakers to eradicate these wrongs. But many children all over the world have also acted independently as promoters of peace and outspoken witnesses against war. They have participated in peace marches, pageants, and plays. Children have written to world leaders asking for the cessation of war, for the implementation of disarmament, and for peace in their everyday lives. They have developed newsletters, stories, and books for other children, about their experiences in war, and how peace might be achieved in our time.
This exhibit celebrates still another aspect of children’s efforts for peace: their artwork. The pieces included, out of over 1500, envision a world in which all people live together in harmony and equality, and where war has been abolished. The drawings and paintings, gathered by Art for World Friendship in 1947-1978, are by schoolchildren who wished to share some aspect of their lives with children in other countries. The posters were created by older students for a contest in for the 4th annual poster contest, 1939, sponsored by the National Circulating Library of Students' Peace Posters, and show what they saw as the best response to threats of
war and violence. These posters are particularly indicitive of their time period as the youth picked up on the prevalent design elements, happenings (such as the No More War demonstrations in Europe), and peace propaganda that prevailed after World War I. A few items in the exhibit were produced between 1976 and 1987, and some are current pieces; these are included here to show children’s continuing hope for peace and their role in causing it to take root. To read more about the two major initatives that sponsored the creation and showing of the artwork, click here.

Images were given a number as they were scanned; when referring to an image, please give this number as well as any title that is shown. The original drawings and paintings (plus hundreds more from Art for World
Friendship) are stored in the Oversized Collection: Graphics, and may be viewed
in person at the Peace Collection. The exception is the images noted as slides
below; the originals, created in ca. 1964-1965, were were probably sent overseas by the AFW to
be exhibited and were never returned.
