Historical Background
Rev. John Dear (S.J.) is a Jesuit priest, pastor, peace activist, organizer, writer, lecturer, and retreat leader. He has worked in homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and community centers around the country; traveled in war zones around the world, including most recently Iraq and Palestine; lived in El Salvador, Guatemala and Northern Ireland; been arrested over 75 times in acts of civil disobedience; organized scores of demonstrations against war and nuclear weapons at military bases across the country, as well as to stop the death penalty; and spent eight months in North Carolina jails (along with Philip Berrigan) for a Plowshares disarmament action. Dear served as Executive Director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation from 1998-2000. After the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center (NYC), Dear volunteered as a Red Cross chaplain, and became one of the coordinators of the Red Cross chaplaincy program. During this time he worked with and/or counseled some 1,500 family members who had lost loved ones in the tragedy, as well as with hundreds of firefighters and police officers, while at the same time he spoke out against the U.S. retaliatory bombing of Afghanistan. Dear currently (November 2006) lives in northeastern New Mexico.
Dear is the author or editor of 20+ books on peace and justice, including Living Peace, Mohandas Gandhi: Essential Writings and Mary of Nazareth, Prophet of Peace. Besides his books, he has had many articles published, and has given hundreds of talks on nonviolence.
Dear was born on August. 13, 1959 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University, and two masters degrees in theology from the Graduate Theological Union in California.
For more information on John Dear, see his web site at http://www.fatherjohndear.org.
