Section 1: Civilian
Public Service
Administrative Files, 1940-1946
Introduction to
Collection The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 provided for
alternative service for conscientious objectors who were assigned
"work of national importance under civilian direction." Led by the
historic peace churches (the Church of the Brethren, Religious
Society of Friends, and Mennonite Church), many churches joined
together in 1940 to form the National Service Board for Religious
Objectors (NSBRO), which coordinated the civilian public service
program. The AFSC was responsible for the administration of
seventeen CPS camps and over thirty special service units which
provided an alternative service program for 3400 men between
1941-1946.
Scope and Content of Collection
Section 1 of the AFSC Collection comprises approx. 123.25 feet
of the total. These records are restricted until the year 2020, in
that anyone making reference to personal information from this
collection must disguise it so that the identity of the
individual/s concerned will not be disclosed. Researchers wishing
to use the collection must sign a form agreeing to this
stipulation.
This material was sent to the SCPC as
transfiles in file cabinets. When the files were transferred to
document boxes, the file drawer number was retained as part of the
new box number [for instance, boxes 1a through 1f were
originally in file drawer #1].
This material has not been processed. The current finding aid was
transcribed from one created in the late 1940s. No attempt has
been made to check whether the categories on the original finding
aid actually correspond with the material in the boxes. These
categories were assigned series designations in July 2001.
