The portrait was in process early in 1858. According to Margeret Bacon in Valiant Friend (p. 170), Mott is holding a copy of Joseph Blanco White's autobiography, The Life of Rev. Joseph Blanco White Written By Himself (1845). The original painting hangs in the FHL reading room.
