Biographical / Historical
The first Swarthmore College yearbook, Halcyon, was published in 1883 by the junior class. It focused on the 1882-1883 academic calendar, with printed lists of Board members, administrators, faculty, and students by class; club and team histories and members lists; some poetry, silly prose, short histories, and illustrations; and paid advertisements. The volume includes some coverage of the Class of 1882. The following year, the Eunomian Literary Society published The Eunomian, an annual with similar content. The Halcyon resumed publication soon afterwards and has been published annually ever since.
The 1891 Halcyon was the first to contain photographs, but only of the faculty and of the 1889 football team. An image of the Swarthmore Mandolin, Guitar, and Banjo Club as well as some pictures of College buildings were added the following year. It wasn’t until the next issue that there was a group photograph of the Class of 1893. 1952 is the last year the Halcyon was billed as a publication of the junior class.
