Biographical / Historical

Job Scott Gidley, Quaker educator and minister, was born on March 21, 1844, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. He joined the Society of Friends in 1866, and in 1874 he married Susanna Wilbur Tucker also of Dartmouth. In 1891 he was recorded as a minister by Dartmouth Monthly Meeting and he served as the Clerk of New England Yearly Meeting. Susanna Gidley (1846-1913) served as an Elder in the Meeting. Gidley travelled widely in the ministry and accompanied Joseph S. Elkinton in 1899 to welcome the Dukhobors to Canada. Gidley died December 22, 1928, in Dartmouth, Mass. Job and Susanna Gidley had five children: Mary Jessie (1876-1946) who married Charles Henry Carter; Henry T. (1878-1944); Annie B. (18-1970) who married Robert Lowry; Alice Wilbur (1884-1971); and Elizabeth E. Gidley (1888-) Both Jessie and her husband graduated from the Westtown School, and Charles Henry Carter was appointed Principal of the School in 1924.

Archibald Crosbie to Job Gidley, 1893-1899

Scope and Contents: 4 letters, sent from Iowa. Crosbie (1830-1912) joined the Society of Friends in Scotland and was acknowledged as a minister before he emigrated to the U.S. in 1881, settling in Iowa. He traveled widely in the ministry and visited Great Britain, Ireland and Norway in 1895.
