This collection contains the papers of Charles J. Darlington, relating primarily to the reunification of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings, his visits to the Five Years Meeting, and his work on Swarthmore College Alumni Fund. He served on the Joint Committee for Organic Union during the years preceding the reunification of the two branches of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1955. He subsequently served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends from 1955 to 1960. Since some of the yearly meetings belonging to the Five Years Meeting of Friends were undergoing similar reunifications, he and several other Philadelphia Friends were invited to the Five Years Meetings in 1955, 1960, and 1963; the name was changed in 1965 to Friends United Meeting. Charles Darlington was in the Swarthmore Class of 1915 and attended his 50th reunion before his death in 1966.

HISTORICAL NOTE

Charles Darlington was born in 1894 on a dairy farm in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Swarthmore College in 1915 with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and in 1916 with a Master’s degree in Chemistry.

He worked for the Dupont Corporation for 43 years and retired in 1959 after having been Superintendent of the Semi-Works at the Chamber Works in Deepwater, New Jersey. He died on February 21, 1966.

Charles Darlington was a Quaker and dedicated to social service through a variety of organizations. He was national chairman of the Friends Committee on National Legislation and was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Friends Service Committee, serving on a number of its committees, including Peace Education, Finance, and Community Relations.

From 1955 to 1960 he was Clerk of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends and for 15 years served as chairman of its Committee on Education. He was also a director of Farmers and World Affairs and served a term as president of the Friends Social Union.

Because of his many community and religious activities in his home town of Woodstown, New Jersey, in 1962 he received the Woodstown Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year award, and in the same year, Charles and his wife Eleanor were presented with the Brotherhood Award of the Salem (New Jersey) County Council on Human Relations.
