		<abstract label="Abstract">Calvin W. Schwabe (born in 1927) is
		  a veterinarian and public health scientist. He married Gwendolyn
		  Joyce Thompson (nicknamed Tippy) in 1951. In 1954, the Schwabes
		  joined the Society of Friends. From 1956 to 1966, Calvin Schwabe was
		  a member of the medical and public health facilities of the American
		  University of Beirut. Beginning in 1960, he served as a consultant to
		  the World Health Organization. In 1966, he established the first
		  department and graduate program in epidemiology with a school of
		  veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis, and
		  served as Professor of Epidemiology within the veterinary and medical
		  schools until his retirement in 1991. The collection contains
		  photocopies of family letters, 1950-1978, sent by Gwendolyn (Tippy)
		  Schwabe with notes from Cal Schwabe to their parents, 1950 to 1978.
		  The originals are deposited at the National Library of Medicine. The
		  letters describe family and every day concerns. Of particular
		  interest are letters sent from Beirut, where the Friends operated a
		  school in Ramallah. </abstract>

		<head>Historical Note</head> 
		<p>Calvin W. Schwabe was born in 1927 in Newark, New Jersey. He
		  earned a B.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1948, a M.S. in
		  zoology in 1950 from the University of Hawaii, the D.V.M. degree form
		  Auburn University in 1954, M.P.H. in tropical public health from
		  Harvard University in 1955, and Sc.D. in parisitology-tropical public
		  health from Harvard in 1956. </p>
		<p> He married Gwendolyn Joyce Thompson (nicknamed Tippy) in
		  1951. In 1954, the Schwabes joined the Society of Friends. From 1956
		  to 1966, Calvin Schwabe was a member of the medical and public health

		  Reference Files. A wedding dress of a Palestinian Friend given to the
		  Schwabes during their service in Beirut was transferred to FHL
		  Relics. General reference books on the Middle East from the same
		  donor will be placed in an appropriate repository.</p>
