Biographical / Historical

Eliza Moore Ambler Foulke (1893-1987) was the daughter of Edwin Moore and Annie Foulke Webster Ambler. In 1923, she married Philadelphia attorney, Thomas Albert Foulke (1893-1962), who was the son of Joseph T. and Laura Lippincott Foulke. Both were birthright Friends and very active members of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting.

Eliza Foulke enjoyed a lifelong interest in history, especially family and local Quaker history. In 1966, she revised "An Account of The Dr. Antrim Foulke-May Foulke Beaumont Property," which she had prepared in 1947, and she added the genealogies of the families involved in that historic house. In 1969 she wrote "A Record of Historical Facts of Gwynedd Meeting." She also compiled notebooks to preserve miscellaneous information about Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, and, in particular, the meeting houses at Gwynedd and Plymouth.

Eliza Foulke was among the first residents of Foulkeways, a continuing care retirement community constructed on the Beaumont property, which had been bequeathed to Gwynedd Monthly Meeting by Charles Beaumont in 1945. She lived at Foulkeways from 1967 to her death in 1987, actively participating in the life of the community and continuing her close relationship with Gwynedd Monthly Meeting.
