Friends began meeting formally in Oneonta in the late 1930s. In 1972 Oneonta Executive Meeting was established by Butternuts Quarterly Meeting. In 1986, Oneonta Friends Meeting united with two other meetings to form Oneonta Combined Friends Meeting, the predecessor to the second Butternuts Monthly Meeting.

Butternuts Monthly Meeting was established in 1988 out of Oneonta Combined Friends Meeting, including Friends in Chenango, Copperstown, an Oneonta/Delhi.
