The Orthodox First Day School Association of Friends of the NYYM was established in 1862 by members of the NYYM, but it was not a subcommittee of the NYYM. It was brought directly under the NYYM in 1870, as the First Day School committee. In 1887, the First Day School Committee merged with the Freedmen’s Committee (see RG2/NYy/501) to form the Bible School and Missionary Board. After two years, in 1889, this committee split into the Bible School Board and the Board of Home and Foreign Missions. The Bible School Board changed its name in 1922, becoming the Board of Religious Education. The Junior Yearly Meeting was organized in 1938 to encourage the children of Friends to be involved in the Meeting and gain experience through their own meetings. In 1948, the Board of Religious Education merged with the Hicksite First Day School and Junior Yearly Meeting Committee (see below) to become the joint Religious Education Committee, under which the Junior Yearly Meeting continued to be run. This organization is ongoing.

The Hicksite First Day School General Conferences began in 1868, being held in New York in 1871. In 1869, the First Day School Association of the NYYM was founded as a separate organization, not under direct control of the NYYM. In 1913 it was brought under the NYYM as the First Day School Committee. In 1943 its name and purpose were changed, becoming the First Day School and Junior Yearly Meeting Committee. In 1948 it merged with the Orthodox Board of Religious Education to become the joint Religious Education Committee, which continued to oversee the Junior Yearly Meeting.

In 1870 New York Yearly Meeting set a revival in motion. In unity with Farmington Quarter a Committee on General Meetings was appointed. Its purpose was to spread knowledge of Quaker principles and to return to the zeal of early Quakers in accordance with Christ. By the mid-1910s, much of the passion for the movement had settled down and by the quarter-century mark, the revivalism movement started its transition into liberal modernism. By 1956 the Evangelical and Church Extension Board was laid don into a new Advancement Committee to carry on the combined functions of the Evangelical and Church Expansion Board and the former Advancement Committee.

The Committee on the Advancement of Friends Principles, generally referred to as the Advancement Committee, was formed in 1899 for the purpose of engaging the Yearly Meeting with a spiritual grounding and knowledge through workshops and conferences, as well as to visit Monthly and Quarterly Meetings in order to revive the ministry of the meetings. The Advancement Committee is a match to the Orthodox Evangelistic and Church Expansion Board. In 1956 the Evangelical and Church Extension Board was laid don into a new Advancement Committee to carry on the combined functions of the Evangelical and Church Expansion Board and the former Advancement Committee.

From 1865 to 1868 the Hicksite NYYM maintained the Committee on the School Fund of the Yearly Meeting and on Education. In 1883 an Educational Committee was appointed, continuing through unification until it was laid down in 1966.

In 1794 the Orthodox NYYM founded a “Committee to prepare a plan for the establishment of a boarding school in the Nine Partners.” This existed through several name variations, including the Boarding-School Committee, Committee for Superintendence of the Boarding-School, and the Trustees of the Boarding School at Nine Partners. In 1844 a Committee on the Subject of Education was established, formalized a year later as a standing Committee on Education to meet four times a year in New York. From 1846 through 1850, both the Committee to the Superintendence of the Boarding School and the Committee on Education stood, but the Committee on Education was laid down in 1850. In 1854 a committee was appointed to examine the proposal to create a central school, which stood as the Committee on Education in 1856 and 1857, when it the Yearly Meeting School Fund was established.

In 1859, it becomes the Committee of Superintendence of the Boarding School at Union Springs, coexisting, under this name or as the Yearly Meeting School Committee, with the Trustees of the Boarding School at Nine Partners through 1863, when the NYYM sold the Nine Partners School. In 1865, the Yearly Meeting School at Union Springs Committee was joined by the Educational Fund. In 1877 these two committees was joined by a third committee, on the Education of Children of Friends. In 1886 the Yearly Meeting School at Union Springs was renamed Friends’ Academy Union Springs. In 1886 the Committee on Education was laid down, to be reestablished in 1893. In 1894, Friends’ Academy Union Springs was renamed the Oakwood School and the Educational Fund ceased to appear in the NYYM minutes. In 1899, the Educational Committee was laid down. In 1904, the Educational Fund reappeared, along with the Boarding School at Union Springs and the Oakwood Biblical and Endowment Funds, but in 1905 only the Trustees of the Oakwood Seminary appeared. From 1906 through unification, the Educational Fund functioned, as did the Trustees of the Oakwood Seminary and the Oakwood Fund.

In 1886 the Yearly Meeting School at Union Springs was renamed Friends’ Academy Union Springs. In 1894, Friends’ Academy Union Springs was renamed the Oakwood School. From that time on the committee has existed as the Committee for the Boarding School at Union Springs, the Trustees of the Oakwood Seminary, accompanied by the Oakwood Fund.

Starting in 1841, the Hicksites had a Library Committee. In 1848 the Women’s Yearly Meeting Minutes named a committee to use the funds of the Meeting to buy books that were approved by the Society as agreeable to the concern and direction of the Yearly Meeting. It was laid down in 1903.

On June 26, 1804, a committee was formed by the Representative Committee on the subject of books. This committee bought select books for meetings as approved by the New York Yearly Meeting Friends. In 1938 in Book and Tract Committee was laid down and turned its stock over to the Mosher Fund Committee.

In 1894, Hicksite Quakers founded the Young Friends Association of New York and Brooklyn, not under the NYYM. They dissolved and reformed in 1901, incorporating the Brooklyn Junior Section and becoming the Friends Association of New York and Brooklyn. This lasted through at least 1905. In 1920, the Hicksite NYYM established the Young Friends Movement, which began to incorporate Orthodox members in 1922. In 1938, the Young Friends Movement officially merged with the Orthodox Young Friends Board to form the Young Friends Fellowship. In 1964 and 1965 the Young Friends Fellowship was renamed the College Age Friends, reverting back to the Young Friends Fellowship in 1966, by which name it continued through at least 1971. In 1971 and 1973 a Senior High Conference was held at Camp Gregory. In later years the NYYM corresponded with Young Friends of North America.

The Nurture Committee was started in 1978 to work with committees in the Yearly Meeting on their concerns brought to their committees.

The AIDS task group was formed in 1991 as a response to a request from the Senior High Group to gather information and help educate. It was laid down in 1993.

The McCutcheon was started in 1951 as a Friends retirement community through estate donations of the McCutcheon Family. It still exists today.

The Unity with Nature Task Group was approved for two years, 1988 – 1990, to be a base for environmental concerns in Yearly Meeting, and to encourage action.

The Committee on Christian Unity was appointed in 1957, and was integrated with the Committee on Interfaith Relations in 1959. The main goal of the committee was to work on interfaith relations. It was laid down by 1978.

The Women’s Rights Committee was started in 1972 to challenge the sexist attitudes and structures within New York Yearly Meeting. In 1997 the Committee changed its name to Women’s Concerns Committee. It still exists today.
