New York Yearly Meeting was first held in 1696 as the Yearly Meeting at Flushing or Long Island, consisting essentially of the Flushing Quarterly Meeting that was set off from New England Yearly Meeting. Meeting for Sufferings was established in 1758 and was held quarterly to represent and hold any business of the Yearly Meeting while it was not in session.

Starting before 1656, the Committee of Ministers and Elders was formed to fill a couple of functions: to record public friends (visiting Friends), as well as to take concern over the individual meetings of New York Yearly Meeting. To do this they appointed members to visit each meeting. The committee also kept note of the numbers of Ministers, Elders, and Overseers in these meetings. In 1828, the Committee split along Hicksite/ Orthodox lines. In 1902 the Orthodox committee changed its name to Ministry and Oversight; in 1907 the Hicksite committee changed its name to Ministry and Counsel. Having joined together in the reunification, the Meeting of Ministry and Counsel still continues today, its main work done through the State of Society Reports each year, which is presented at Yearly Meeting and has been since before 1800.

The standing Committee to Revise Faith and Practice was appointed at Representative Meeting in December of 1977 under the Meeting of Ministry and Counsel for "ongoing consideration of interpretation and revision of and aderence to Faith and Practice." No unity was reached on the Faith section, but the Yearly Meeting approved a revised section on Practice in 1986 and the Advices and Queries in 1987. A first reading of the main protion on Faith was approved by Yearlt Meeting in 1993, and final approval to all material for a 1995 edition of Faith and Practice was authorized two years later.

The Adhoc Committee on Renewal was formed in 1966 – 1970 with four objectives: “To give: New Light on Quakerism & the World; New Love of God at the Center; New Life among Friends in the Meeting; and New Leaven among Men in the World.” Another Adhoc Committee was formed in 1992 – 1994 to explore the spiritual vitality of the Yearly Meeting, to figure out reasons for decreased membership, and to explore the relationships between the Monthly and Quarterly Meetings to the Yearly Meeting.

Visitations Committee

Invervisitations were very active during 1970 – 1972. It was run through both Ministry and Counsel and Religious Educations (including Adult Religious Education), and its purpose was to asses the state of the Meetings, and to give advices when called upon for it.
