New York Yearly Meeting was first held in 1696 as the Yearly Meeting at Flushing or Long Island, consisting essentially of the Flushing Quarterly Meeting that was set off from New England Yearly Meeting. Meeting for Sufferings was established in 1758 and was held quarterly to represent and hold any business of the Yearly Meeting while it was not in session.

John G. Lane left a Legacy of $100,000 to be used by the New York Yearly Meeting. At his death in 1900, his will stated that the money invested should be used for educational purposes for future generations of Quakers to carry forth God’s work. The last report in the Yearly Meeting minutes was in 1934.

The Women’s Fund began in 1709 with $1,500 as a traveling fund for women who could not afford to come to Yearly Meeting Sessions. In 1826 William R. Thurston executed a bond for $1,060 for the Fund. In 1851 he divided the amount he had to each Yearly meeting (Hicksite and Orthodox) - $972.81. For the Orthodox side, a Committee for Care of the Women’s Fund was established in 1886. This Committee was laid down in 1983.

The Henry H. Moger Fund was started in 1875 from the Estate of H.H. Moger for printing and circulating books and tracts in the spirit of the principles of Christianity as promoted by early Friends. The Fund continues to be used for this purpose today.

Lindley Murray set in his will that his estate would be used in a Trust. In 1836, at his death, the Trust was $42,700. Murray gave the following as the purposes for his Trust: in liberating slaves, assisting their descendants in their education, in purchasing and distribution of books which promote “piety and virtue and the Truths of Christianity,” and finally in assisting the poor. He set the Fund up appointing six Trustees in distribute these funds. Today there continue to be trustees appointed and funds disbursed.

Concerning the Washington Summit.

 Records Committee and Haviland Records Room

In 1897 a Hicksite Committee on Records was appointed. A joint Hicksite and Orthodox committee was formed in 1904 to attend to the care and preservation of both Yearly Meetings’ Records. In 1924 John Cox moved the archives from 15th Street Meeting House to a room adjacent to Friends Seminary. In 1965 the Elizabeth Haviland Records Room was created as a part of the new Friends Seminary building. In 1997, the Haviland Records Room, with the approval of Yearly Meeting, transferred all New York Yearly Meeting records to the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College. The Records Committee still exists today to continue depositing collected minutes of the Yearly and subsequent meetings in Friends Historical Library, as well as to manage funds for their preservation. Keepers of the Records have included: John Cox Jr (1904-1948), Percy Clapp (1948-1858), Agnes Campbell (1958-1966), Mary G. Cook (1966-1977), Elizabeth H. Moger (1978-1997).

A Committee was formed by 1988 in order for the plans of the tercentenary celebration of New York Yearly Meeting. The maintasks of this committee was to plan celebrations for the Yearly Meeting, and to oversee preparation and publication of a written history of the Yearly Meeting (Quaker Cross-Currents, 1995), and an updated Directory of Meetings, 1993. it was laid down by the end of 1996.

 Handbook Committee

Established by 1965, the Handbook Committee had the duty of giving details to officers of the Yearly Meeting, to describe the function and description of Yearly Meeting committees, and to have information of the funds of the Yearly Meeting. It had an informal predecessor to study the Yearly Meeting Committees. It was laid down by the end of 1984.

Sessions Committee: Orthodox/United

After 1956, the Administrative Committee selected the locations of and made arrangements for the annual residential Yearly Meeting and biannual Representative Meeting. It also prepared the schedule and programs for the annual Sessions. It was responsible for publicity, hospitality and financial arrangements for Yearly Meeting and Representative Meeting. In 1977 the Committee changed its name to the Sessions Committee. There are between 25 and 35 members. This committee still exists today.
