Carpenter, Syd. 2005. Ceramic Sculpture. Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD. An exhibition of established African American ceramic artists during the National Conference on Education in the Ceramic Arts at the James E. Lewis Museum of Art. Blue Noise, a large scale wall piece, was included.

Carpenter, Syd. 2005. Chemistry of Color. Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA. Exhibition of African American Artists in Philadelphia between 1970-1990 from the Harold A. and Ann R. Sorgenti Collection.

Carpenter, Syd. 2005. Processing the Signal. Coppin University, Baltimore, MD. Sculpture. As part of the National Conference on Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) attended by over 6000 artists, educators, collectors and students, this exhibition presented a series of large scale ceramic wall pieces reflecting observations of plant shapes and movement. These works combine organic and industrial elements to imply utility and the incrementally rigorous movement of a growing plant. An interest in the use of plants in traditional healing practices is an underlying theme. A lecture about the work was presented to the students and faculty at Coppin University.

Carpenter, Syd. 2005. Remedy. Sande Webster Gallery, Philadelphia, PA. Sculpture. One person exhibition of new ceramic sculptures created in response to traditional healing combined with an interest in plant form and movement. These new sculptures reflect new experiments in surface treatment that departs from the entirely acrylic painted surfaces of previous works. A more liberal use of oxides, slips, in addition to graphite applied to the clay surface achieve surfaces recalling skin, fur and hide. In addition to wall pieces, several large scale pedestal pieces were shown. Shapes were derived from a combination of the silhouette of various leaf forms with the volume and mass of an animal.

Carpenter, Syd. 2005. Terra Sutra. Montage Gallery, Baltimore, MD. Pottery. A group exhibition of work by nationally recognized ceramic artists. A recent work, Red Noise, a large scale wall piece that references internal noises of the body was included. By manipulating color and texture of the painted surface, the solidity of the clay is transformed to "reveal" the movement of sound. Forms recalling an inner ear are the clue to these references.

Carpenter, Syd. 2004. On the Wall. The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA. Sculpture. Wall pieces by eight nationally recognized ceramic sculptors. Exhibited was a sculpture from the Internal Noise Series that gives three dimensional form to sounds moving through a body.
