Tripod - The Library Catalog

Tripod serves as the primary access point to collections of Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, and Haverford College Libraries. The catalog contains bibliographic records for books, periodicals, video and audio recordings, CD-ROMs, sound recordings and electronic books, indexes, journals, and primary sources.

In the library catalog, you may search for an item by: Author – including directors, editors, illustrators, translators, and corporate authors; Title – including video and periodical titles, as well as series and alternative titles; Subject -- using the Library of Congress Subject Headings; Word – keyword searching of titles, contents and corporate authors; and additional specialized access points -- Call number, Government Document number, etc.

Finding Materials Using Library of Congress Subject Headings: You have two useful options when looking for subject-related material in the library catalog. First, you may conduct a subject search which requires the use of exact Library of Congress subject headings. These subject headings can be found in a set of red books behind the reference desk. The second option is a word search. Your search words are matched against title words and contents notes and subject headings.

A very common and recommended search strategy:

  • Perform a word search.
  • Select the relevant items.
  • Examine the actual subject headings assigned to the relevant items and search on those headings that look promising.
If you locate an item held at Bryn Mawr or Haverford, click on "Request Item" to have that item delivered to McCabe.

Other Library Catalogs
