EventsThe Lang Center serves as a home base for many activities and programs linking the campus to communities in the U.S. and abroad through service and social action. We sponsor and co-sponsor conferences, speakers and workshops that will educate and inform the community service, social action, and social justice work of students, staff, faculty and community members.
Debating for Democracy (D4D)
Debating for Democracy (D4D) is a distinctive campus-based program that represents the mission of Project Pericles in action. It combines Periclean focused student research on issues of current social concern, the development of thoughtful opinions, and the personal and collective advocacy of these opinions in the forums of democracy. D4D is also an inter-campus program that brings together Pericleans from across the country to discuss these issues and debate their considered judgments. The D4D program began in 2006, and consists of two programs: the D4DNational Conference and the D4D on the Road workshops.
During the D4D National Conference, student leaders from participating Periclean colleges and universities including Swarthmore College participate in workshops, keynote addresses, and panel discussions that introduce students to experts from the world of civic engagement, education, environment, politics, public policy and social entrepreneurship.D4D on the Road is a one-day training workshop held at Project Pericles campuses, like Swarthmore College, around the country each year. The program is designed to provide novice and seasoned political activists with the tools and tactics they need to get their message across to community leaders, elected officials, the media, and other influential people and organizations.
