Debating for Democracy

Advocacy Competition

Debating for Democracy (D4D)™ inspires students to become successful advocates in their communities. To encourage engaged citizenship, Project Pericles, Inc. is requesting original letters to elected officials from teams of two or more students at member institutions—like Swarthmore College.

On March 30 and 31, 2017, two Swarthmore student leaders will be invited to attend the 2017 D4D National Conference in New York City hosted by Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts. The conference consists of workshops, keynote addresses, and panel discussions that introduce the students to leading figures in civic engagement, education, environment, politics, social entrepreneurship, and a wide range of other public policy issues.

One of the activities at the national conference is the legislative hearing in which finalists of the letter-writing competition will discuss their policy ideas with a panel of current and former elected officials and other public policy experts. Two lead authors of the five finalist letters – selected by Project Pericles, Inc. – will travel to New York City to present their public policy recommendation at the hearing.
