Hello. My name is Adam Preset. I'm the Systems Administrator in Information Technology
Services at Swarthmore.
My responsibilities are varied. Whenever anyone asks me what I do, I
fumble around and eventually say, "I work with computers." It's
slightly more complicated than that, but generally most people's eyes
will glaze over if I go into any detail. In case any visitors are
interested, here are a few of the more salient aspects of my job:
- administering e-mail, file, web, and application servers of
various kinds
- working with operating systems including Linux, Compaq Tru64 Unix,
Solaris, Windows, and the Mac OS, and making them work together
- maintaining and troubleshooting problems with all the hardware
that runs the operating systems above, including Alpha servers, Sparc
servers, Intel workstations, Power Macs, network appliances, and
all the various peripherals: tape drives and jukeboxes, RAID
controllers, and printers
- administering vital network services like DNS and DHCP
- working with our other networking staff to ensure that virtual
private networking, remote access, and our firewall are operating smoothly
- acting as a resource for other departments who need advice or help
with running Unix
Rivetted yet? No? Well, you get what you pay for.
Here are a few ways to reach me:
- e-mail: preset-at-swarthmore.edu (change -at- to @, of course, and use pgp if you can)
- phone: 610.328.8508 (or just x8508 on campus)
- office: Beardsley 211D
- usps: Swarthmore College, ITS, Swarthmore PA 19081
E-mail is usually preferred. That's probably how you'll get ahold of me
fastest.
Here are some of the tools I use in my daily work. They're in no particular
order, but I like them enough to mention them:
