Spam Blocking FAQ
The Tri-Colleges (Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, and Haverford) use a service, managed by Google, to monitor and block the majority of spam before it is delivered to your inbox. All Swarthmore email accounts are automatically enrolled in the spam blocking service. You will receive a daily email listing the "quarantined messages" that this service has blocked for you, if any.
If you have quarantined messages, you will receive a daily summary report each morning. If you see a legitimate email message in the list of suspicious junk email, click on the Subject link (or the word 'Deliver'). The message will be released to your Swarthmore email account inbox, and you can read it there. Note that the message will have the date it was sent, NOT the date/time you released it, so you may need to scroll through messages in your inbox to find the message.
To log in, enter your full email address (including @swarthmore.edu) and your email password. After logging in, you may choose to review, ignore, deliver or delete messages detected as spam (junk). To retrieve a message, click on the Subject link to read it directly or the 'Deliver' button to have it delivered to your inbox.
Quarantined (or blocked) messages are stored for 30 days. You can optionally delete them by checking the box next to each message and clicking "Remove", or if you do nothing with them they will automatically be purged after 30 days.
If junk mail is still getting through, or too many legitimate messages are being blocked, you can tune the junk mail filter to be more lenient or aggressive. To change the settings, log into the Message Center, click on "My Settings" (near the top right of the window). Then select "Manage Junk Filters". You can then change the settings and see how the system responds.
