Protect Your Handheld Devices

ITS recommends using a security password for handheld devices. Setting a password takes a just seconds to setup, and could help to protect unwanted access to your calendar, files, email, contacts, and other information accessible on your handheld device.

Instructions by Device

For the Treo

  1. Select the Home Button
  2. Using the down arrow on the 5-way button, scroll to Security
  3. Tap Security
  4. Tap the field -Unassigned- under the Password section
  5. In the Password field, create a memorable password
  6. Tap the Hint: field
  7. Type in a hint that will help you remember your password. The hint should not match your password
  8. Tap OK
  9. Verify Password by entering it when prompted
  10. Tap OK
  11. From security screen, scroll to Auto lock
  12. Change the auto lock time to 10 minutes (adjust time to your preferences).
  13. Tap OK
  14. In the Current Privacy section, change the setting to Hide Records (allows you to mark calendar events and records as Private.
  15. Tap Lock & Turn Off to activate

For the Blackberry

  1. Using the trackwheel, choose Settings
  2. Select Options
  3. Choose Security Options
  4. Using the trackwheel, scroll to General Settings
  5. Scroll to the Password settings, change options to Enabled
  6. Reduce the number of password attempts to 4 (or a number you are comfortable)
  7. Scroll to Security Timeout, select this option to 10 minutes
  8. Use Escape button to exit
  9. Scroll up to click
  10. Enter a password
  11. Verify your password
  12. Use Escape button to exit back to the main menu

For the iPhone and iPad

  1. Go to the main menu
  2. Tap the Settings icon
  3. Tap the General icon
  4. Select Passcode Lock option
  5. Enter a password
  6. Re-enter the password
  7. Tap Require Passcode Immediately
  8. Tap After 5 minutes (shorter times are more secure)
  9. Tap the Passcode Lock arrow from the menu
  10. Tap the Home button
