Canon Printers

Departmental printers are supplied as part of a campus-wide printing contract with Canon. Please use the phone number on the printer to order toner cartridges and repair services from Canon.

This page includes instructions for connecting to Swarthmore's Canon printers on the \\swat-print server. If your office printer is not a Canon model, you should use the \\admin-print instructions here:

Instructions for non-Canon printers

Connecting to a Canon Printer from Windows

  1. Click your Start button
  2. Select Run (Windows XP and Vista) or Search (Windows 7).  In Windows 8, select Search from the Charms Bar.
  3. Type \\swat-print and press Enter. If prompted for credentials, enter GARNET\username in the username field, and your password.
  4. Find the printer you're looking for
    • For ease of use, the printer naming convention is "department-building and room number", example "its-beardsley110"
    • If you do not know, or cannot determine, the name of the printer, please contact the Help Desk for assistance.
  5. Double-click on the printer (it will install automatically)

Connecting to a Canon Printer from a Mac (10.6 and 10.7)

  1. Open System Preferences, select Print & Fax, and click the lock in the lower left corner to make changes.
  2. Select the +(plus sign) to add a printer
  3. Click the IP tab
  4. For Protocol, choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD
  5. In the Address field, type swat-print
  6. In the Queue field, enter the name of your printer.
    • For ease of use, the printer naming convention is "department-building and room number", example "its-beardsley110"
    • If you do not know, or cannot determine, the name of the printer, please contact the Help Desk for assistance.
  7. Under Name, enter the name of your printer.
  8. Under Print Using, select the Generic PCL Laser Printer.
  9. Click Add. After you click Add, the Printer list window will reappear with the selected printer added to the list of printers.
  10. The Generic PCL Laser Printer will allow you to print, but if you would like to be able to utilize printer features like collation or stapling, you will need to download and install a driver specific to your printer model. Unzip the .pkg file and run the installer.
    • iR 1025IF - No Mac Driver available, use Generic PCL Laser Printer.

  11. After installing the Canon driver, re-open System Preferences,
    select Print & Fax. Select the printer and click
    Options and Supplies.
  12. Under the Driver tab, pull down Print Using and select the Canon driver.

 Connecting to a Canon Printer from a Mac (10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.9 Mavericks)

  1. First, download and install the driver specific to your printer model. Unzip the .pkg file and run the installer. This installer may warn that it cannot open because it is from an unidentified publisher.   You can launch the installer by control-clicking on the file and choosing "open".

  2. Open System Preferences, select Print & Scan, and click the lock in the lower left corner to make changes.
  3. Select the +(plus sign) to add a printer
  4. Click the IP tab
  5. In the Address field, type swat-print
  6. For Protocol, choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD
  7. In the Queue field, enter the name of your printer.

  8. Under Name, enter the name of your printer.
  9. Under Use, select the option for Select Printer Software..., and browse to your Canon printer model (see step 1).
  10. Click Add. After you click Add, the Printer list window will reappear with the selected printer added to the list of printers.
