Employee Recognition Program
Service Award Program
The College recognizes the value of employee contributions to its goals and mission and recognizes long service to the institution. Each year at the Winter Gathering held in December, those employees celebrating significant milestones in their service to the College are honored and recognized by their supervisors, President's staff, and peers.
The Human Resources department implemented a significant improvement to the Employee Service Award Program in 2008 by selecting C. A. Short Company, a well-respected leader in the field of recognition and reward programs, to administer the Service Award program. This change provided a remarkable variety of reward selections for the College's diverse employee population and significantly improved the quality of the recognition program.
At the Winter Gathering celebration when service award recipients are called to the stage to be recognized they are congratulated by the president and receive a presentation packet. The packet contains a certificate of appreciation, a congratulatory letter from the president and a gift selection brochure with instructions on placing a gift order.
An employee's length of service is calculated from his/her hire date with the College through December 31st of the year in which the service awards are celebrated. For those employees with a break-in-service longer than six (6) months, length of service will be calculated from his/her re-hire date. If the break-in-service is less than six (6) months, the employee's previous hire date will be used.
The 25-year award recipients have always been the centerpiece of the winter celebration. Each employee is called to the stage individually and his/her supervisor makes a presentation to the gathering about the employee's years with the College.
Service Award Gift Selection
For each award category there are over 90 gifts to choose from among nine gift groupings: watches and pens, jewelry, gourmet, electronics, outdoors, home and leisure, tools and traditional. Service award recipients receive a catalog with the gifts for their service award category at the December Winter Gathering when they are called to the stage to be recognized. Once the order is placed with C. A. Short Company, it will be shipped within 2-5 days to the award recipient's home address. Should there be any difficulties with the gift item, the award recipient will contact a "live" C. A. Short Company representative (no voice mail) empowered to make decisions on the spot
For the 25-year award category, the traditional gifts are so well loved they will continue to be an available choice. These award recipients will be able to select a College chair or rocker, College clock or an Adirondack chair; alternatively, they will be able to select a gift from the C. A. Short Company catalogue for their category.
A sampling of the gifts available can be viewed on the Human Resources web site www.swarthmore.edu/Admin/hr.xml. On the left hand navigating bar, click on Employee Relations and then on Employee Recognition; scroll down to the bottom of the page. The gifts displayed are samples of gifts from C.A. Short Company offerings in 2008.
After serving at least ten years with the College and attainment of age 60, an employee who resigns is considered a retiree. Following commencement each year, staff gathers to celebrate the end of the academic year at the annual Ice Cream Social. Those staff members that have retired during the academic year are recognized and honored. At the event the employee's supervisor gives a brief presentation about the employee's career at the College. The retiree receives congratulations from the president and the gift of a framed reproduction of a Barbara Seymour '63 watercolor painting, Parrish Lawn.
