Child Labor Law Summary

Employment of Minors

Departments who are planning to hire minors under the age of 18 who have not yet graduated from high school are required to follow strict regulations regarding hours of work. Pennsylvania regulations are as follows:

Ages 14 and 15

During the school term: a maximum of 4 hours on school days and a maximum of 18 hours per school week; they may work a maximum 8 additional hours on Saturday and Sunday; they may not work before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m.; nor may they work more than 6 days per week.

During summer vacation: a maximum of 8 hours per day and a maximum of 44 hours per week; they may not work before 7:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m.; and they may not work more than 6 days per week.

Ages 16 and 17

During the school term: a maximum of 8 hours per day and a maximum of 28 hours per school week; they may work an additional 8 hours on Saturday and an additional 8 hours on Sunday; they may not work after midnight Sunday through Thursday; they may not work before 6:00 a.m. any day of the week nor may they work more than 6 days per week. They may work on Friday and Saturday nights until 1:00 a.m.

During summer vacation: a maximum of 8 hours per day and a maximum of 44 hours per week; nor may they work more than 6 days per week.

Minors are required to be provided a 30 minute meal period on or before 5 consecutive hours of work are performed.
