Summer Research Fellowships

20 Swarthmore students will be awarded fellowships to conduct full-time research for 10 weeks each summer. The application is usually posted online immediately following winter break. Many of these students have presented their research at local and national scientific conferences, and many have co-authored publications in academic journals based on their summer research projects. Travel Opportunities Fund

Students can apply for travel funds to attend professional research conferences and meetings. Applications should be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to the conference. Recent conferences attended by Swarthmore students with these funds include:

      Course Fellows will assist faculty with curricular initiatives. Some will work during the summer and others during the academic yea

      HHMI Mentoring Mini-Grants 

      This initiative is designed to encourage the development of scientific identity and meaningful mentoring relationships for our first-generation and URM students who strive to succeed as NSE majors. Mentors will report on their use of mini-grants to the HHMI Steering Committee, which will disseminate the information to other faculty in order to promote these opportunities.  

      Faculty or staff can apply for mentoring mini-grants to support their mentees in a variety of ways:

      • to hire the mentee as a research assistant, a mini-grant will pay the student's hourly wages; 
      • to bring the mentee to a scientific conference, a mini-grant will cover the student's registration and travel costs;
      • to facilitate an off-campus summer research internship, a mini-grant will provide a housing stipend for the mentee; 
      • to encourage the mentee to re-take a foundational science course (e.g., chemistry or math) in order to earn at least a B, a mini-grant will provide a summer tuition grant; 
      • to support mentors' professional development related to mentoring diverse students, e.g., workshops, webinars, and publications; 
      • to bring alumni scientists from diverse backgrounds to campus for scientific talks or career panels.
