Jackson Elementary Math Club

Crazy 8s is a recreational after-school math club that helps fourth graders enjoy the math behind their favorite activities.  Run by students from Swarthmore’s Department of Educational Studies, it is designed for kids of all math abilities.  It promotes the exploration of mathmatical principles, skills, and strategies through creative hands-on experiences, activities, and games.

The club meets once a week at Andrew Jackson Elementary, from 3:15-4:15. Club activities are organized into 8-week one hour kits.

Staff Support

The nonprofit Bedtime Math Foundation provides free materials and coaching for the program. https://crazy8s.bedtimemath.org/home/.  Swarthmore College provides a college student leader to plan and run the sessions at Jackson. Additional Swarthmore College students volunteer their time to help in the program, and volunteers also observe in Jackson classrooms, enriching their understanding of the students and the school environment. 4th grade teacher Lauren Tierney sponsors and provides staff supervision of the club.
