H1N1 Information and Recommendations

Sept. 11, 2009

Dear Parents and Families,

I am writing to share with you the information we are disseminating on campus and the recommendations we are encouraging your student to follow related to the H1N1 virus. The information is divided into three areas: preventive care and preparatory actions, information about vaccines, and guidelines for what to do if your student doesn't feel well.

Given the spread of the H1N1 virus, particularly the cases that have appeared on college campuses over the past couple of weeks, we hope that all students remain as informed as possible and take as many precautions as possible to minimize the opportunity for infection. We have not had cases on campus yet. But as students work hard to balance their academic work, extracurricular activities, and well-being, we know that many get less sleep, push themselves, and ultimately tax their immune systems. We know that most of you are already in the ear of your students, letting them know the importance of maintaining their good health. We hope the advice we've asked them to heed reinforces and complements the messages you may already be delivering.

To see what we've told them, please see: http://www.swarthmore.edu/x27160.xml

One of the things I want to add is that you may want to consider putting together the mentioned "flu kit" as a care package for your student.

My hope is that we can encourage students to exercise appropriate caution, make healthy, well informed decisions, and that together, we can minimize the impact of H1N1 on campus and on the community.

Sincerely,
Garikai Campbell
