China's exceptional economic growth over the last 30 years has been one of the most important events of the 20th century. In this talk, economist Chang-Tai Hsieh '91 discusses the controversy surrounding the sources of China's economic growth, particularly with regard to the role of institutions.

Hsieh is the Phyllis and Irwin Winkelried Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Hsieh graduated with a B.A. in economics with highest honors from Swarthmore and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
