5/25: Shupe and Chaplin Honored at Annual Swarthmore Athletic Awards Banquet

Senior goalkeeper Nathan Shupe (Medford Lakes, NJ - Shawnee) received the Society of Kwink Trophy and sophomore midfielder Vernon Chaplin (Pelham, AL - Indian Springs) received the Dunn Trophy on May 4th at the 2005 Swarthmore Athletics Awards Banquet.

Shupe, who was a two-time All-Centennial Conference goalkeeper, was selected as the 2005 recipient of the Kwink Trophy, which goes to the male athlete who best exemplifies the five principles of the Society of Kwink: Service, Spirit, Scholarship, Society, and Sportsmanship. The Kwink Trophy has been awarded annually since 1951.

Shupe was a three-time CC Academic Honor Roll selection, and he was chosen as a CoSida Academic Regional All-American in his junior year. In addition to setting new standards at Swarthmore as an athlete, Nathan is an outstanding scholar as an astrophysics major, and is a fantastic role model to teammates, fellow students, and to youth soccer players throughout the Swarthmore community.

Chaplin, who also runs track & field in the winter and spring, anchored the center of the midfield for the past two seasons, and scored his first collegiate goal in the Garnet's 3-1 victory against Haverford on October 30th. He is also a member of the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, and was recently received the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, awarded in recognition of academic merit in math and science.

Chaplin's performance and contributions to both the men's soccer and the track & field programs earned him the 2005 Dunn Trophy, which is awarded annually to the sophomore male athlete at the College who had contributed the most to the athletic program. It is named in honor of Robert B. Dunn, the long-time Swarthmore College coach who is in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Hall of Fame.

Garnet Finish Strong in Spring Season

The Garnet soccer team finished the spring season on April 24th, hosting a spring tournament for the third consecutive spring. After falling in the championship match a year ago, the Garnet rebounded to win the 2005 title over the University of Pennsylvania's Club team.

The six-team tournament, which included Widener University, Rutgers University-Camden, Lincoln University, University of Pennsylvania Club, and Brookdale Community College, acts as the finale to the five-week spring "non-traditional" season for the Garnet.

In the final, after a 1:1 deadlock in regulation, rookie goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe saved the third penalty in the PK shootout to win it for the hosts. All three Garnet players made their kicks in the best-of-three shootout. The Garnet fell behind in the first half of the 40-minute match on a nicely taken goal by Penn. That was the only goal Swarthmore conceded all day.

Then, with just over 5:00 remaining in the second half, and the Garnet pushing forward to try to get the equalizer, freshman defender Darren Johnson drilled a poor clearance into the upper corner of the Penn net to force the PK shootout. Penn's goalkeeper, who had made several brilliant saves in the match, was caught out of position on the play, which appeared to be the only way Swarthmore could get past him.

Fall Season Recap by Andrew Quinton '08

The men’s soccer team made great strides during the 2004 season, playing in the Centennial Conference playoffs for the first time ever and reaching the finals of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Region Tournament. Overall, the team went 12-7-2, and its 6-2-1 record in conference play was its best ever.

Behind the leadership of third-year head coach Eric Wagner and co-captains Nate Shupe ’05 and Alex Elkins ’06, the Garnet got off to a fine start and stood at 4-0-1 through five matches. Highlighting the early run were the team’s victory in the Garnet Alumni Classic and its first-ever win over Dickinson. In the Dickinson match, Andrew Terker ’06 set the tone for his season by scoring the winning goal with only 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. Terker would notch three more game winners by season’s end, scoring all four goals in identical 2-1 wins over Muhlenberg and Ursinus and putting the Garnet ahead for good in a 4-1 victory over Lebanon Valley in the ECAC quarterfinals.

As the season went on, the student body gradually became aware that this was a special year, and the newly converted fans began coming out in record numbers to support the team. Students formed the Garnet Club and hosted several tailgate parties before Saturday home games. The team responded by compiling a 9-1-2 home record, losing only to Wesley in the ECAC championship game. “We don’t lose at home” became a team mantra.

Over fall break, the Garnet traveled to Lewiston, Maine. There the team learned first-hand just how cold the weather gets in New England, and it got to play on the same field where Wagner played in high school. Unfortunately, the squad dropped both of its matches on the trip, losing to St. Josephs and Bates. After returning to Swarthmore, the team dropped a third straight match when it lost a road game against second-ranked Johns Hopkins.

But the Garnet was not about to let its season slip away. Swarthmore played very hard in a 0-0 tie with McDaniel before finishing the season with wins over Ursinus and Haverford (yes, Haverford), giving the team momentum for the playoffs.

Entering the Centennial playoffs as the No. 3 seed, the Garnet faced McDaniel in the semifinals at Hopkins’s Homewood Field. The team was unable to find the back of the net through regulation, but goaltender Shupe made five saves to extend the match into overtime. Shupe appeared to have held off McDaniel again in overtime, but after diving to make a save, he was unable to stop Peter Gaitens from scoring the winning goal on the rebound and eliminating Swarthmore by a 1-0 score.

Swarthmore’s season was not yet over, however, as the team received an invitation to the ECAC south region tournament. Seeded fourth, the Garnet rolled over Lebanon Valley in the quarterfinals and beat Washington and Jefferson 5-3 in the semis, earning the right to host the championship match against Wesley. Brandon Washington ’08 scored his fourth goal of the season, but the Wolverine attack was relentless, and Wesley came away with a 3-1 victory.

Many individuals distinguished themselves over the course of the season. Shupe, Elkins, and Terker were all selected to the All-Centennial Conference second team. The three seniors Shupe, Kirk Ellison, and Marty Griffith were all major contributors, with Ellison starting all 21 games and scoring three goals and Griffith starting 15 times and making a major contribution to a defense that allowed only 18 goals all year. Michael Bonesteel ’08 led the team in scoring with seven goals, four assists, and 18 points, with Washington just behind at 17 points on 4 goals and 7 assists. Terker’s eight goals led the team. Shupe had a career-high six shutouts, allowed only 0.77 goals per match, and compiled a 0.859 save percentage.

With two freshmen leading the team in scoring and Patrick Christmas ’08 and Brendan Grady ’08 starting all 21 games, the team showed great promise as it headed into the off-season full of optimism about the seasons ahead.

11/14: Garnet Fall in Championship Match

Junior forward Evan Myers scored two goals to lead No. 7–seed Wesley College (15-7-1) to a 3-1 victory over host No. 4 seed Swarthmore College (12-7-2) in the Championship game of the ECAC Division III Southern Region Men’s Soccer Tournament. Myers was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Myers staked the Wolverines to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of play when he headed home a Stuart Trafford free kick. The two squads battled the rest of the half but could not score as Wesley, who held an 8-2 advantage on shots, took the 1-0 lead into the break.

Myers struck again in the 56th minute when he found a hole in the defense and tucked an Andrew Tescione cross just inside the left goal post to give the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage.

Swarthmore cut the lead to one at 61:45, when freshman forward Brandon Washington hit a blast off the right post and into the left side panel. Wesley answered with an insurance goal when CJ Twombly scored an insurance goal in the 70th minute to make it 3-1. The Wolverines defense then held off a late Garnet charge to secure the victory.

Wesley edged the Garnet in shots 14-12 and held a 7-4 advantage in corners. Swarthmore senior goalkeeper Nate Shupe recorded four saves, while Edward Hunt recorded two saves for Wesley.

11/13: Garnet Gun Down Presidents In ECACs

Swarthmore College midfielder Vernon Chaplin scored a goal and added two assists to lead the No. 4-seeded Garnet over No. 8 Washington & Jefferson, 5-3 in semifinal action of the ECAC Division III Southern Region Men’s Soccer Championship.

Sophomore midfielder Mike Seminero gave W&J a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when he scored off a Brian Witkovitz cross beating Swarthmore’s senior keeper Nate Shupe. The Garnet answered 11:04 later when junior forward Andrew Terker gathered a Colton Bangs feed, spun and blasted it by Presidents’ keeper Michael Garet.

Sparked by the goal, the Garnet offense began to pressure the ball. Chaplin kept the ball in play at midfield, moved by several defenders and found an open Alex Elkins, behind the defense, who put it into the back of the net to give the Garnet a 2-1 lead just 2:14 after the equalizer.

The score remained the same until sophomore midfielder Matt Schiller took a Kirk Ellison cross and put it by Garet at 72:31.

Chaplin scored the eventual game-winner at 78:50 when he took a Colton Bangs pass and blasted it over Garet to give the Garnet a 4-1 lead.

The offense picked up for both squads in the game’s final minutes as junior midfielder David Hoyt scored his first goal of the season when he took a Chaplin pass and knocked it off a Presidents’ defender into the goal at 83:12, giving the Garnet its fifth consecutive goal.

W&J did not quit as senior forward Andy Komar and freshman defender Jonathan Bonfield put goals by backup goalkeeper Reuben Heyman-Kantor at 85:29 and 88:02 respectively, to make the final, Swarthmore 5, W&J 3.

The Garnet advance to tomorrow's 1:00 p.m. Championship game against Wesley. The Wolverines tied Franklin & Marshall 3-3 and advanced on penalty kicks.

Wesley advanced to the final on penalty kicks 5-4 in seven rounds.

Wesley scored three goals in the final 17 minutes of regulation to rally from a 3-0 deficit to tie Franklin & Marshall 3-3 in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III Southern Region Men’s Soccer Championship at Swarthmore College.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the Wolverines advanced to tomorrow’s 1:00 p.m. final against Swarthmore by defeating the Diplomats 5-4 after seven rounds of penalty kicks.

F&M led 1-0 at the half as freshman forward Brandon Corday scored off a rebound in the 24th minute of play. Senior midfielder Wallace Eisenhauer made it 2-0 when he scored his seventh goal of the season off a rebound in the 48th minute of play and Corday picked up his second of the day just over nine minutes later as the Diplomats opened a 3-0 lead.

The Wolverines came howling back as junior forward Even Myers got them on the board at 73:50. Junior midfielder Derek Roberts-Dukes cut the lead to one when he chipped a ball over F&M keeper Ed Stelz just 1:50 later. Roberts-Dukes then tied the game on a free kick with 3:03 remaining to send the game into overtime.

The two squads battled through a scoreless two overtime periods before letting penalty kicks decide the game.

In penalty kicks, Wesley jumped out to a 3-1 advantage before the Diplomats rallied to tie it on their final two kicks. Robbie Polk scored for Wesley and Colin Griggs evened the match for F&M. In the seventh round, Mike McCans put it past Stelz for a 5-4 lead. Corday stepped up to shoot for the Diplomats looking for the tie but Hunt moved to his right stopping the kick, sending the Wolverines to the final.

No. 4-seed Swarthmore (11-6-2) used three late second half goals to defeat No. 5 Lebanon Valley 4-1 in quarterfinal action of the ECAC Division III Southern Region Championship at Clothier Field.

Brandon Washington '08 added an insurance goal on a breakaway at 83:51 and Mike Bonesteel '08 scored his seventh goal of the season at 88:29 when he redirected a Scott Long '06 feed off a rebound, past LVC keeper Brandon Morgan.

Lebanon Valley (10-6-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Justin Klunk headed home a Fran Pitonyak free kick.

The Garnet tied the game at 32:04 after Morgan was called for a violation in the box. Washington took the indirect kick at the top of the box, tapped it to Elkins who proceeded to put it into the empty net.

Swarthmore held an 18-11 advantage in shots, while the Dutchmen led the Garnet 13-4 in corner kicks. Morgan made three saves for LVC and Nate Shupe '05 stopped three shots for the Garnet.

The Mules controlled the first half of the game, holding a 1-0 lead and an 11-3 shot advantage.

For the game, Muhlenberg held an 18-10 shot advantage as Shupe recorded six saves, while Peter Bennett turned away two shots for the Mules.

10/6: B-Boys Strike Again

Colton Bangs '07 and Michael Bonesteel '08 scored goals to send Swarthmore to a 2-0 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) on a frigid Wednesday night at Clothier Field.

Bangs took a pass from Scott Long from about sixteen yards out, and calmly deposited the ball into the back of the net with 13:16 left in the first half. It was the third score of the season for Bangs and the fifth of his career.

Brandon Washington '08 did most of the work leading to Swarthmore's second goal. The freshman midfielder sent a free kick rocketing towards the far right post, forcing St. Mary's keeper Rick Besore to come out and play the ball. The ball caromed off Besore's chest and right to the feet of a charging Bonesteel. Bonesteel tapped the ball past the beaten keeper at the 74:01 mark, giving the Garnet the final 2-0 margin.

It was the team-high sixth goal of the season by Bonesteel, good for second in the Centennial Conference.

9/21: Scoreless Tie Keeps Tide Unbeaten

Rueben Heyman-Kantor '06 made five saves in his first start of 2004, preserving a 0-0 tie that lasted two overtimes between Swarthmore and the University of Scranton on Tuesday night at Clothier Field.

The I-476 rivalry is without a score in the last 136 minutes and forty seconds, dating back to September 23, 2003. On that night the two squads battled to a 1-1 tie at Fitzpatrick Field in Scranton, with the Royals out-shooting the Garnet 25-24.

Swarthmore was the aggressor in this contest, blasting nineteen shots to Scranton's eleven. Andrew Terker '06 led the Garnet with six shots, while fellow forward Brandon Washington '08 had five.

Scranton had a couple of opportunites mid-way through the second half, their best coming in th 65th minute. The Garnet cleared the ball from the box, right to the feet of Dan Lavelle. The defender struck a ball from 30 yards out that just floated over the cross bar.

Terker, the hero in Sunday's double overtime victory over Dickinson, gave the Royals the most fits. Late in the second half the sophomore ran free into the left side of the box and unleashed a left-footed rocket. Scranton keeper David Kelb was positioned perfectly on the inside post and prevented the ball from crossing the goal line.

Kelb and Mathew Richardson combined for five saves for the Royals (1-4-2), who played to their second consecutive scoreless tie.

The Garnet, who remain unbeaten at 4-0-1, travel to Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon. Game time has been changed to 2:00 p.m.

9/4: Garnet Make It a Long Night for Rams

Scott Long '06 tallied his first career hat trick, while the freshman tandem of Brandon Washington and Michael Bonesteel combined for three goals and three assists as Swarthmore rolled to a 9-0 victory over SUNY Farmingdale in front of almost 200 fans at Clothier Field on Saturday night.

The Rams suffered some tough luck in the first half, knocking the ball in their own net at the 18:10 to give Swat the early 1-0 lead. The Garnet, hosting the first-ever Garnet Alumni Classic, gave their fans plenty to cheer about. The two freshman strikers ellicited a roar five minutes later, as Bonesteel blasted a slick back tap from Washington into the back of the goal for a 2-0 advantage.

Misfortune surfaced once more for the Rams, as another ball trickled into their net off the foot of a defender. The Garnet took the 3-0 lead into halftime having out shot the SUNY Farmingdale 12-0.

Swarthmore came out blazing in the second half, applying extreme pressure on the Rams defense. Colton Bangs '07 drew a foul in the penalty box and calmly finished off the penalty kick at 55:52 for the 4-0 lead. Bonesteel struck again five minutes later, scoring his third goal of the season with a blast to the upper right corner of the net.

Long entered the game in the 59th minute and collected all three scores in a span of five minutes and twenty seconds. The first goal came via a header of a beautiful cross from Washington at 76:16 for a 6-0. The second was created by the speedy Bonesteel, who outraced the Ram defender up the left side and dropped the ball back into the top of the box where Long found the back of the net at 79:25.

Long got his final goal by being in the right spot at the right time, finishing off a rebound that got away from Ram keeper Patrick Santiago. Washington put up the ninth and final goal a minute and a half later, corralling a rebound and calmly placing the ball into the lower left corner, easing the Garnet to their second win of the young season.

The Garnet out shot the Rams 28-0 for the game, while compiling nine corner kicks to zero for SUNY Farmingdale.

This Swarthmore squad has created excitement on campus, as the men's soccer team started the season 2-0 for the first time in thirty-eight years. The nine goals is the most scored by a Garnet squad since the 1989 version defeated Delaware Valley 9-1, and you have to go all the way back to 1965 for the last time Swarthmore won a game by nine scores.

The Garnet return to action on Sunday in the second game of the Garnet Alumni Classic. Widener faces SUNY Farmingdale at 2:30 p.m. and the Garnet follow against Wesley at 4:30 p.m.

Nine Freshmen Joining Men’s Soccer Squad

Swarthmore College head men’s soccer coach Eric Wagner announced today that nine student-athletes will enter pre-season later this week in his recruiting class of 2008. Swarthmore’s incoming freshmen join a squad that returns 17 letterwinners and nine starters from last season’s team. The following student-athletes join a program that had its best season in the past eight a year ago while moving up the Centennial Conference (CC) standings in 2003:

Michael Bonesteel – a forward and midfielder from Clifton Park, NY, scored 8 goals and had ten assists to lead his LaSalle Institute team in points last year. He also played for the Clifton Park Premier club team, with whom he reached the Eastern NY State Cup finals.

Patrick Christmas - a central midfielder from Chapel Hill, NC (East Chapel Hill H.S.), was a three-year starter and two-time all-conference player in high school. He also played on the Durham-Chapel Hill Strikers and on the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (ODP) squad.

J.P. Faunes – a central midfielder from Austin, Tex. (L.B. Johnson H.S.), captained the South Texas ODP team and played for the Austin Flyers club team. Faunes was an all-conference player at St. Stephen’s before moving to L.B.J. High School.

Brendan Grady – a defender and midfielder from San Jose, Calif. (Bellarmine College Prep), Grady also played with the Santa Clara Ruckus, with whom he was a national semifinalist prior to his senior year. Grady was a three-year starter at Bellarmine and an all-conference player when the team were 25-0 and ranked #1 in the country in his junior year.

Jason Horne – a defender from Baldwin, NY (Baldwin H.S.), was the MVP for the Eagles Soccer Club. Horne most recently played center back for the Syosset Soccer Club. A strong, quick central player, Horne helped lead Baldwin H.S. to the Division Championship in two of his four years at the school.

Darren Johnson – a defender from Lexington, Va. (Rockbridge County H.S.), and a co-captain of his high school team. Considered one of the best players in Lexington in his senior year, Johnson also played with the Fort Defiance club team.

Andrew Macurdy – a midfielder from Lumberton, NJ (Rancocas Valley H.S.), Macurdy lettered in three sports in high school, including track and tennis. He captained his high school team and was selected as the MVP in the South Jersey Senior All-Star game last fall. He was also an honorable mention all-state selection in 2003.

Ryan Sutcliffe – a goalkeeper from Milford, Del. (Milford H.S.), Sutcliffe started for the Delaware ODP team and was an all-state selection his junior and senior years in high school. He was a four-year starter at Milford, was a four-time all-conference selection, and captained the team.

Brandon Washington – a forward from Mesquite, Tex. (Greenhill School), Washington was a two-time all-conference player, and an All-Metroplex selection for the three-time Southwest Preparatory Conference champions. He also played for the North Texas ODP team and the Dallas Inter club team.

The Garnet open the 2004 season with the Annual Alumni Match – this year commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Swarthmore team that made it to the NCAA Championship match in 1974 – on Saturday, August 28th with a 3:00 p.m. kickoff at Clothier Stadium. The regular season opens the following Wednesday, September 1st, with an 8:00 p.m. kickoff against Cabrini College, also at Clothier Stadium.

2004 Season Preview

In 2003, the Swarthmore soccer team created a stir in the Centennial Conference and the Mid-Atlantic region, knocking off the No. 12-ranked team in the nation and putting together the program’s best conference record in nine years. In 2004, the Garnet aim to take another step toward reestablishing a tradition of excellence.

Returning 10 of 11 starters, Swarthmore should continue to be solid in the back while adding the scoring punch that has been missing for the past several years. The Garnet once again will be anchored by goalkeeper Nathan Shupe (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee), who started all but one match in 2003 as a junior and won All-Centennial Conference honorable mention. With a 3.7 GPA in astrophysics, Shupe was also selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division District II second team. Other returning starters include seniors Marty Griffith (Wilmington, DE/Cab Calloway) and Kirk Ellison (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego), juniors Alex Elkins (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Pingry), co-captain in 2003, David Hoyt (Berkeley, CA/St. Ignatius), Charlie Taylor (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake), Scott Long (Sherman Oaks, CA/Harvard-Westlake), and Andy Terker (Allentown, PA/Moravian Academy), and sophomores Matt Schiller (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) and Vernon Chaplin (Pelham, AL/Indian Springs).

The Garnet has added several talented newcomers who should help the team continue to climb the Centennial Conference standings.

The 2004 schedule includes the standard Centennial Conference match-ups, including a home match with 2003 conference champion and NCAA second-rounder Muhlenberg. Swarthmore will also travel to Maine for matches with St. Joseph’s College and NESCAC member Bates.

The 2004 Garnet Soccer season kicks off August 28 with the annual alumni match; this year’s event will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1974 Garnet team that made it to the NCAA championship final.
