Auditions, Fall 2013
The Music Faculty welcomes new and returning students. We encourage everyone, whether or not they intend to major in Music, to take advantage of one or more of the following performance opportunities:
Balinese Gamelan (Director: Professor Tom Whitman)
Gamelan Semara Santi is a classical percussion orchestra from Bali, Indonesia, consisting of tuned gongs, bronze-keyed xlophones, drums, and bamboo flutes. 20 to 25 musicians participate, mostly Swarthmore students plus a few additional community members. We perform classical and modern compositions from Bali - some instrumental, some with with dance. We rehearse Indonesian style, without the use of notation. Musicians may receive 0.5 credit per semester if desired. We welcome any student musican to play, with or without prior training in music. No audition is necessary for musicians. (Students who wish to dance should have a background in some form of dance, not necessarily Indonesian dance.) Weekly rehearsals: Mondays, 4:30-6:30 PM in Lang Music #410, plus an additional 30 minutes per week in smaller groups ("sectionals"), day and time TBA. There will also be three Sunday afternoon rehearsals. Co-directed by Tom Whitman, I Nyoman Suadin and Ni Luh Kadek Kusuma Dewi. For more information, please email email@example.com or just come to the first rehearsal on Monday, September 2 at 4:30 pm.
Chorus (Director: Professor Joseph Gregorio)
Want to relieve stress while making beautiful music? Come sing with us - and get academic credit for it! The Swarthmore Chorus and Chamber Choir are holding auditions. The Chorus, a mixed group of about 70 singers, has sung such major works as Bach's B-minor Mass and St. John Passion, Mozart's Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Brahms' Requiem, Schönberg's Friede auf Erden, and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. The Chamber Choir, a select mixed group of about 24 singers, tackles more intimate repertoire, such as Tallis' Lamentations of Jeremiah, Lasso's Missa pro defunctis, and Bach's cantatas and motets. The Chorus rehearses every Wednesday from 7-8:30pm; Chamber Choir rehearses every Wednesday from 8:30-10pm. Membership in Chorus is necessary to audition for and sing in the Chamber Choir. Academic credit available for both ensembles. Contact Joseph Gregorio (firstname.lastname@example.org) for audition information.

Please email Andrew Hauze (email@example.com) with any questions.
Lessons for Credit (Music 48) and Music Lesson Subsidies
The Department offers academic credit and financial subsidies to some students who take private music lessons. In order to be eligible, you need to perform an audition for a faculty jury, be a member of a Departmentally sponsored ensemble, and satisfy some additional requirements. If you are interested in this opportunity, it is vital that you attend the Music 48 Orientation Session scheduled during Orientation Week in the Lang Concert Hall. This year's meeting is on Wednesday, August 28, from 2:00-3:00 pm.
Auditions for Music 48 will take place on Friday, September 6, from 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM in Lang Concert Hall. Please sign-up for a specific audition time on the Department Bulletin board, top level of Lang Music Building, opposite the Department Office. (Please note: these auditions are required in addition to the separate auditions for Department Ensembles listed below.) You will be asked to play a five-minute excerpt from your repertoire with an accompanist provided by the Department (unless your work is an unaccompanied solo). Bring the accompaniment with you. See the Department bulletin board for more details.
Chamber Music (Director: Professor Michael Johns)
The Department of Music and Dance encourages the study and performance of chamber music through the Elizabeth Pollard Fetter Chamber Music Program. Students are matched with a professional chamber music coach and perform at departmentally sponsored concerts. Groups have included mixed string/wind/piano/vocal ensembles, string quartets, jazz quartets and drumming ensembles. Music from different traditions and historical periods is supported. Students are expected to rehearse weekly by themselves in addition to working with their coach. All participants must register for the course, either for credit or no credit. One semester in a Department Ensemble is a prerequisite or co-requisite for each semester of Music 047. This applies to all students in a Fetter chamber group. It is expected that Fetter students in Department Ensembles will play the same instrument/voice in both activities.
Auditions will take place on Friday, September 6 in Lang Concert Hall, following the MU48/Lessons for Credit auditions. Please note: If you are auditioning for MU48/Lessons for Credit, you do not have to audition separately for the Fetter Program. Indicate your interest in participating in chamber music on the MU48 sign-up sheet. If auditioning for Chamber Music only, sign-up for a specific audition time on the Department Bulletin board on the top level of Lang Music Building (opposite the Department Office). You will be asked to play a five-minute excerpt from your repertoire with an accompanist provided by the Department (unless your work is an unaccompanied solo). Bring the accompaniment with you to school. See the Department bulletin board for more details.
