Matt Murphy received an A.B. in German and Politics from Princeton, an M.A. in German and European Studies from Georgetown, and is completing a Ph.D. from UC San Diego. His dissertation concerns transitional justice, or dealing with the past after a regime change, in contemporary Eastern Europe. His other research interests include political and economic transformation in Europe, and problems of democratization more broadly.
Before coming to Swarthmore in 2006, Matt was a visiting assistant professor at Reed College. Outside of academia he has worked in the international development industry. He teaches on European politics, democratization, ethnic and identity conflict, and political economy.
