Searching for Records of New York Yearly Meeting
Records of the Quaker meetings and committees that are part of New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends have been deposited in the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College since they were transferred here from the Haviland Records Room in 1997; the originating meetings usually retain only records currently being used.
The primary access to information about these records is through our on-line bibliographic catalogue, TRIPOD.
There is a master name index, available on-line, to the records of NYYM that were on deposit in FHL as of 2001. The call and volume numbers in this index indicate the location of the citation in the volumes which are housed in FHL. In addition, there are other individual indices to some of the meetings in New York Yearly Meeting. A list of all of our printed indices, by meeting, is also available.
Researchers will need to be aware that due to the Hicksite schism in 1828 and the Wilburite controversy some twenty years later, there may be two or three Quaker meetings with the same name in any location; the records of each will be mutually exclusive, usually until Reunification in 1955.
