The first Board of Managers of Swarthmore College was appointed by the Board of Managers of the Friends Educational Association, the founding committee of the College.
At the time of incorporation, the only formal link to Quakerism was a requirement that all members of the Board of Managers be members of the Religious Society of Friends. This requirement was dropped by amendment of the Charter in 1908 so that the College would qualify for Carnegie funding for faculty pensions. The Charter was further amended in 1910 to eliminate the stockholder provision, making the Board of Managers a self-renewing body. Other procedural amendments at various times increased the legal limit of Corporation's capitalization and real estate holdings.
Once the charter was obtained, the first job of the Board of Managers was to raise funds and build a facility. The building, now named Parrish Hall in honor of the first President, was completed just in time for the opening of the first academic year in September 1869. The College graduated its first class in 1872, six women and one man. The student body grew steadily for the rest of the nineteenth century and in spurts at various times thereafter to stand at about 1350 in the 1990s.
This collection includes the records that document the work of the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College beginning in 1862, together with the records of the Board of Managers of the Friends Educational Association (1862). Also included are the records of committees appointed by the Board to oversee the operation of the College from its founding to the present. Records consist of minutes, committees of the Board, lists of members, resolutions, reports, papers of individual members of the Board, and secondary works and reference files relating to the Board of Managers.
