Navin Sabharwal '14 was one of the winners of this year's Sigma Xi Student Research Day Poster Competition of the Thomas Jefferson University Chapter. The competition involved presenting one's poster and answering questions based on the presentation. Navin's poster, entitled "Investigating the Interactions between DNA and a Platinum Metalloporphyrin," was based on the research he performed with Dr. Liliya Yatsunyk.
Laura Wang '10 was awarded the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation Fellowship to study science education at the Teacher's College of Columbia University. The fellowship is granted to talented students who are committed to teaching science and mathematics in the United States.
Alice Wong '13 was awarded with the American Chemical Society's summer undergraduate research fellowship. The 14 awardees are chosen based on their research proposals, academic records, faculty recommendations, and passion for laboratory science. This award provides students with funding to carry out their own summer research at their own undergraduation institution. It also covers the cost of attending a visit to an industrial campus the following fall, where the awarded students meet for a dinner, an award session, various scientific talks, a tour of the campus, and a poster session presenting their findings. All awardees were also recognized by ACS Publications, the publisher of Organic Letters and The Journal of Organic Chemistry. Congratulations, Alice!
Professor Stephen Miller was awarded the Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award for excellence in teaching and researching with undergraduates. Recipients of this award are tenure-track professors who work primarily (or exclusively) with undergraduates and exhibit nonpareil dedication to their students both in the lab and in the classroom.
The department celebrated National Chemistry Week (Oct 16-22), a community-based annual event that is organized by the American Chemical Society. Festivities included a chemistry-themed cake and teaching third- and fifth-graders at Swarthmore Rutlege School about polymers with the Jiggle Gel activity kit. more...
