The Navajo Language Academy Workshop will convene on July 6 and end on July 23, a three-week workshop. This workshop will be held in Blanding, Utah on the San Juan campus of the College of Eastern Utah. The workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. so come ready to learn, share, and participate!

Remember this is for you as workshop participants only. Bringing other family members is discouraged because we will be attending classes, learning and doing homework and limited dorm space.

Dorm space is available beginning Monday, July 5. Mr. Wesley Hunt at the College’s housing office (located in the Cafeteria Hall, see map) will be available to distribute keys. Ted Fernald, our director, will also be there on Monday. The campus is small. You won’t get lost.

Be sure to bring linens and blankets for your twin size bed and pillows and towels. There are 2 beds to a room and one bathroom for every 2 rooms. This means that up to 4 people will be sharing a bathroom. There are no private bathrooms. No problem, though because everyone will make new friends. Just enjoy the workshop and relax in the dormitories. The setting is very nice and relaxing. Y’all enjoy, learn, share, and actively participate!! Make new friends! Remember also: there is a small fridge in each room and if I’m not mistaken, a small microwave, too.

Meals are available in the cafeteria on campus for a cost of $16.50 for three meals per day. Or you can buy meals individually: $5.50 for breakfast, $6.50 for lunch, and $7.00 for dinner. Meals are served at the following times:
Breakfast 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
Lunch 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Dinner 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Courses: Click here for infromation.
There is an additional fee for course credit. Course credit is available through the University of New Mexico Department of Linguistics. We are currently working out details with UNM to lower the rates for us. It maybe something like $250.00 for a 3-hour course. This would be absolutely wonderful if they do this for us! On the other hand, the NLA regrets that it does not have funds to cover these expenses. You would have to cover this expense yourself.

Stipends If you need financial assistance the NLA will grant you up to $100* per week ($20.00 per day) to help with food and transportation. *We may add a few dollars more if our funds allow us. Specific detailed info on this at the first meeting.

NLA is a non-profit organization with an all-volunteer staff. This summer’s workshop is funded mostly by small donations with some supplemental funding from the National Science Foundation and the Swarthmore Foundation. The staff and instructors do this work because they LOVE the Navajo language! Diné Bizaad t’áá íiyisí bi¬ danilª!
