Office Hours (Other times by appointment)

Tuesday and Thursday 11:30-1:00
I am only regularly on Haverford Campus Tuesdays and Thursdays this semester. If the above office hours are not good for you talk to me then we should be able to set up another time. I also have office hours at Swarthmore (Pearson 102) on Wednesdays from 10:00-11:30 if that works for you. Because I teach on multiple campuses, emailing me is the best way to get a hold of me.

Textbook

Problem book in phonology Morris Halle and G. N. Clements (1983) MIT Press

Available in the Haverford Bookstore. If you buy a used copy, make sure all pages are there. There will also be a few readings posted to the Blackboard page for this course.

Course Objectives

(1) To be able to transcribe and read IPA notation used to represent the sounds of the world's languages.
(2) To become aware of how the sounds patterns of a language are represented in the cognitive system that is phonology.
(3) To be able to provide analysis of various phonological patterns in language general and language specific terms.

Evaluation

45% Homeworks (12)
30% Final Homework
25% Phonological Sketch

Homeworks
Homework assignments will occur about once a week usually due on Tuesday.  These assignments will be tied with the current lecture and will be discussed in class on the day they are due.  Consequently, most Tuesday classes will be a combination of lecture and homework discussion.  Always come prepared to discuss the homework assignment on the days they are due.
Final Homework
To end our semester and class, there will be a 'final homework' which will consist of a few phonology problems similar to ones done for homework. This homework set will be given a letter grade and is expected to demonstrate the knowledge you have acquired during the semester. No collaboration will be allowed for this homework set.
Phonological Sketch
As part of this class you will 'adopt' a language and develop a phonological sketch of it. This sketch is due the last day of class. The sketch should contain the following information about your chosen language:
(1) biographical information: where is it spoken, who speaks it, how many speakers are there, etc.
(2) phonemic inventory: what are the phonemes of the language
(3) allophonic inventory: what are the surface allophones of the language
(4) syllable structure: what is the allowed syllable types in the language
(5) metrical structure: what is the stress pattern of the language
(6) phonological rules: you should identify and briefly discuss two phonological rules in the language
(7) homework problems: you should develop two homework problems based on what you know about the language, one problem should be an 'allophonic' problem and the other should be based on one of the phonological rules you've identified
(8) bibliography: a list of the sources you used for this language

ALL ASSIGNMENTS SHOULD BE TYPED AND HANDED IN ON TIME.  Free IPA fonts are available (for Mac and PC) from SIL so you will be able to type all assignments.  LATE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  Exceptions to this policy for medical reasons or family emergencies will be dealt with on a case by case situation.

Class Schedule

The topics for each class is listed below. Readings and homeworks are listed on the date that they are due so make sure that you have your work done for class. Assigned readings beyond the "Introduction" in Halle and Clements (henceforth HC) are available on the Blackboard web site for this course. Problems from Halle and Clements that will be discussed in class are also listed. Make sure to look at the problems before we discuss them in class to make sure any questions you have are answered about them.
