Here is a sample rubric that I used to evaluate student position papers on the impending War in Iraq in Lesson 6: Rational Choice.

1. Introduction- there is a clear position and thesis statement.

Total Possible Points: 15 points

15-Student has clear position and thesis statement

10-Student does not state a clear position in the thesis statement

5- Student does not have a thesis statement but has a clear position stated.

3-Student does not have a thesis statement or clear position stated

2. Support- were the details or evidence sufficient, accurate, and/or relevant?

Total Possible Points: 30 points (10 possible points for each body paragraph)

For each paragraph:

10- Student has topic sentence and at least 2-3 sufficient, accurate, and/or relevant details to support it.

7-Student does not have a clear topic sentence but does have at least 2-3 sufficient, accurate, and/or relevant details to support topic

5-Student has topic sentence but only has 1-2 sufficient, accurate, and/or relevant details to support topic.

3-Student does not have a clear topic sentence and has mostly details which are not sufficient, accurate and/or relevant.

3. Focused argument into conclusion- was a rational choice presented in the conclusion?

Total Possible Points: 15 points

15-Student stays focused throughout entire paper, has a strong conclusion with rational choice presented.

10-Student stays focused throughout paper, but does not have a strong conclusion with rational choice presented.

5-Student does not stay focused throughout paper, but has a strong conclusion with rational choice presented.

3-Student does not stay focused throughout paper or has a weak/no conclusion.

4. Logically Organized

Total Possible Points: 10 points

10-Student demonstrates logic throughout paper, starting with thesis statement, body paragraphs with topic sentences, and conclusion.

7-Student demonstrates logic in the structure of paper, but may have some gaps within the body paragraphs.

5-Student demonstrates some logical order but there are some gaps between paragraphs.

3-Student does not demonstrate logical organization between paragraphs and within sentences.

5. Smooth Transitions between paragraphs

Total Possible Points: 10 points

10-There are smooth transitions between every paragraph.

7-There are mostly smooth transitions, except perhaps one or two minor examples.

5-There are only some transitions and some clear examples where transitioning needs to be improved.

3-There are few or no smooth transitions between paragraph.

6. Vocabulary/Structure- was it appropriate for the intended audience, purpose of paper?

Total Possible Points: 10 points

10-Vocabulary/structure is appropriate.

7-Some vocabulary words are awkward/inappropriate. Structure is appropriate [persuasive essay/position paper/editorial].

5-Some vocabulary words are awkward/inappropriate. Structure needs to be improved.

3-Vocabulary and structure are not appropriate.

7. Writing is neat, presentable, and mechanically correct. [deductions for spelling/grammer errors]

Total Possible Points: 10 points

10-Writing is neat and presentable. Student has 1-2 or no mechanical errors or spelling mistakes.

7-Writing is neat and presentable. Student has some minor spelling or mechanical errors.

5-Writing is neat and presentable. Student has several spelling or mechanical errors that make it difficult for the reader to understand writing.

3-Writing is not neat or presentable and there are many spelling or mechanical errors.

Scale: A (90-100), B ( 80-90), C (70-80), D (60-70). I also used a "+/-" system.
