Previously, Carroll had been head coach at Franklin & Marshall College (1989-2000). In his tenure at F&M, Carroll coached seven All-Americans and over 20 school record holders. His 1999 men's indoor track & field team won the Centennial Conference Championship. Carroll earned his bachelor's (biology, 1982) and master's (secondary education, 1985) degrees from Villanova University. He also studied extensively in the physical education sports medicine graduate program at Ithaca College. While an undergraduate student, Carroll was a member of the Villanova track and cross country teams. He earned Big East and IC4A championships while on the Wildcats two-mile relay team and finished second in the Big East indoor 1,500 meter run his senior season. Carroll's personal best mile is 4:02.34.
