The Swarthmore
Women's Soccer team has a tradition of promoting quality academics
and explosive play on the field. The women at Swarthmore are expected
to take their academics seriously while striving for athletic
excellence. They work hard to achieve their personal goals with
heart, enthusiasm and sustained effort.
The women on the soccer team challenge and immerse themselves in all aspects of the campus. Ten of the players from 2000 played a second varsity sport and 4 others competed on club sports. In addition they also are involved in numerous community service projects and in various clubs including Vertigo-go, the yearbook and one even co-founded a new group "Multi." Many come with excellent soccer resumes as 3 were ALL-STATE(MD, 2xCO, NJ), and 8 were recognized as ALL-STARS in their League, Conference, County and/or District (IN, 3xCO, 2xPA, NJ, 2xCA, 3xMD, TX.) Additionally, 15 participated on Club teams(MA, PA, MD, IN, FL, NH, NJ, TX, CA, NY, VA) and 4 on ODP teams(TX, PA, MA, NJ.) Many also received all acadecimc rewards and were regional and ALL LEAGUE competitors in other sports.
The class of 2001 was a prime illustration of this excellence in the classroom and on the field. Heather Marandola won the Dinny Rath award for her excellence on the athletic fields here at Swarthmore. In addition to being a key member of our program, she led the basketball team to a conference title and NCAA berth and anchored a young softball team, earning all-conference honors in the process. She is now working as an Electrical Engineer at a company in New Jersey. Sarah Jaynot only won the May E Perry Award for leadership and athletic excellence at Swarthmore but also the Oak Leaf Award at graduation for the senior woman who is outstanding in leadership, scholarship, and contributions to the college. In this year alone she went to the NCAA's in Track and Field and helped break 4 school records with some of our other soccer/track athletes. She is graduating with a double major in Honors English and Spanish, earning High Honors, and will be moving to Boston. Sari Altschuler participated in Soccer, Track and Lacrosse in her four years while double majoring in Honors English and Biology. She will be going to Venezuela to teach and do educational research next year.
The field of play will be controlled by Junior Midfielder Claire Hoverman, fresh off a Centennial Conference title in the 800 meters, and Sophomore Katey McCaffrey, winner of the First Year Phenom award. The scoring will be spearheaded by Sophomore Jackie Kahn (Cohasset, MA), the second leading scorer last year, as well as the new talents of Sophomore Corey Pilver (Murrieta, CA), a transfer from Colby College where she was Rookie of the Year. A number of other newcomers should also add immediately to the offensive attack. Sophomore Catherine Salussolia (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) will anchor the defense from the goal. She may see some new faces with her as the returning backs, led by Erica Kaufman (Dayton, NJ) and Rebecca Rogers (Lexington, MA), will be joined by a group of incoming players.
Although three strong seniors are graduating and some quality juniors are going abroad, this year's team has a strong and enthusiastic core group of players who are excited about their prospects. The classes of 2003 and 2004 have seen plenty of action and are experienced. With some talented new players coming in, the question of depth for the Garnet has finally been answered. Exciting horizons are ahead for the Garnet.
