Students Get Involved

Athletics are an important part of student life at Swarthmore. Because we are a small school, every student has the chance to realize personal growth through physical accomplishment.

Whether you want to join an intercollegiate or club team...participate in organized intramurals...develop skills in a life sport...or just have fun, you will find ample opportunity at Swarthmore.

Program Variety!

* Intercollegiate Athletics offer varsity competition in 22 sports to high school athletes with the interest and ability to play at a higher level.

At Swarthmore you will achieve your athletic goals without sacrificing your educational values. Former athletes are now at the top medical, law business, and graduate schools, and are embarking on challenging careers.

Most teams vie for championships within the Centennial Conference and successful teams or individuals may qualify for NCAA or ECAC postseason competition.

Many teams also travel extensively to play or train. In recent years teams have visited California, Florida, the Carolinas, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Venezuela.

* Club Teams compete against other colleges and clubs, but are student-run and generally practice less often than intercollegiate teams.

* Intramural Teams allow the athlete to participate in a structured but less intense enviornment. Competitive or recreational league play, tournaments, and special event are featured throughout the school year.

* Physical Education classes are required of all students for two semesters. Classes emphasize life sports and wellness opportunities such as fitness training, weight training, aerobics, life saving, self-defense, archery, fencing, dance and swimming. (Playing on an intercollegiate team also counts toward the requirement.)

Financial Aid

As a member of the NCAA Division III, Swarthmore awards financial aid based on demonstrated family need rather than athletic ability.

If eligible, you can expect to receive a combination of scholarship grant, loans, and work study. Swarthmore strives to make it possible for all students who are admitted to attend regardless of financial circumstance.

Mission Statement

"Athletics should contribute to a student's education and well-being. Whether at the class, intramural, club or intercollegiate level, athletics should teach the value of teamwork, commitment, perseverance, communication and giving your best.

Through sports we learn about our own limits and abilities, relationships with others, sportsmanship, and how to win or lose with grace. Athletics can help students transcend their individual differences, relieve the rigors of academic work, and enhance the College's sense of community.

Swarthmore's program pursues the amateur ideal in athletics by offering a wide range of activities, for the novice as well as the skilled, and charging no fees for any contests. The program exists for students, not spectators. The college is committed to maintaining excellent facilities, an outstanding staff, and an appropriate balance between athletics and other aspects of student life."
