In section 5 of chapter 8 of Palka, do the problems 44--46, 56, 59, 60, 65, 74, 81, 85, and 86. Feel free to continue to work on any earlier unresolved problems. In particular, we are committed to reconsidering 75 from Chapter 7, the problems ensuing from problem 8 in Chapter 8, and problem 24 of Chapter 8.

Read sections 3 and 4 of Chapter 8. You should spend most of your time in section 3.

- Joan: Applications of the residue theorem to doing integrals. You may well find straightening out the examples to be plenty to talk about.
- James: Theoretical applications of the residue theorem. Here you may well want to choose just one of the open mapping theorem, Rouches theorem, or the argument principle. Each is earthshaking.

In both cases, be prepared--at least--to tell me what you think is the most important thing in your section when you come to speak to me Thursday. I will not give any further suggestions in public, but if either of you feel in need of direction, feel free to talk to me at any time.

Dan will bring the food for break.
