Objective
In the phylum chordata,
somites give rise to the skeleton and the development is
dependent upon the expression of certain genes. For many
species, such as mice, rats, and chickens, this gene has
been determined to be Pax-1. We know that all chordates
possess a set of genes that induces somite development.
Since the development of the Zebrafish, Danio rerio,
is similar in many ways to the development of other
chordates such as mammals and birds, we will try to
determine if valproic acid has similar effects on fish. By
subjecting a number of
Danioembryos to
different concentrations of valproic acid, we will observe
the embryo development for variations in the somite
development, as well as if different concentrations of
valproic acid affect the development of the embryos in
general.
