Readings

I have decided (after consultation with previous students) to have no official textbook for this course. Nonetheless, I recognize that there are a variety of circumstances where it is useful to examine a general text. Therefore, I have put several copies of Marine Biology and Invertebrate Zoology texts on reserve in Cornell Library in case you would like to have reference to such a source.

As described below, you will have mandatory assigned readings from the original literature each week. These will be in folders at the reserve desk in Cornell.

Grading

(1) Weekly Quizes – Almost every Friday I will give a short (10 to 15 minute) quiz that will cover material from lecture and from the assigned papers. A quiz will typically focus on the material covered since the last quiz, but, I reserve the right to use the quizes to pull different elements of the course together and as such they will be cumulative. (~30%)

(2) Three "Full Dress" Lab Reports - Two will be on experiments that will be conducted by the whole class, the third will be on an experiment of your own design. All written assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date. (~55%)

(3) Discussion of Assigned Papers and general participation - Each week (usually on Friday) we will discuss material from the primary literature. Three times during the semester, you will have to help lead group discussion. Your grade for this category will come from the questions that you supply to lead discussion and your participation in discussion on other Fridays. I will also be evaluating your participation and on field trips and in the lab. (~15%)
