Near Tioga Pass, however, there are two mountains of metamorphic rock: Mt. Dana and Mt. Gibbs, two of the highest peaks in the region.

In Mono Lake, limestone deposits (calcium carbonate) called Tufa are exposed because of the receding waters. The deposits form when water from springs, rich in calcium ions, enters the carbonate-rich water of the lake.
