Installing and testing Python, along with numpy, scipy, and matplotlib

First, select your platform:

Mac OS X

This has gotten easier than it used to be:

  1. Download and run the Mac OS X 64-bit Python 2.7 installer for the Anaconda distribution from this page
  2. Test your installation by opening an interactive Anaconda Python session (that is running python in the terminal). In the Python session, type
    import numpy
    import scipy
    import matplotlib
    All three statements should complete with no errors. If it works, you're all set!

Note you can also use install these packages with MacPorts, but I wouldn't recommend this unless you already have XCode installed and/or are already a MacPorts user.

Windows
  1. Download and run the Windows Python 2.7 installer for the Anaconda distribution from this page
  2. Test your installation by opening an interactive Anaconda Python session (that is running python in the terminal). In the Python session, type
    import numpy
    import scipy
    import matplotlib
    All three statements should complete with no errors. If it works, you're all set!

Ubuntu Linux

I'm confident this will work for Ubuntu 12.04 or 14.04.

  1. Install the python-numpy, python-scipy, and python-matplotlib packages using apt-get or your favorite package manager.
  2. Run python in the terminal. In the Python session, type
    import numpy
    import scipy
    import matplotlib
    All three statements should complete with no errors. If it works, you're all set!
