Abstract

The National Baseball Hall of Fame was inaugurated in 1936, with five players elected into the first class. The earliest year that a player from the hall of fame played was 1890, about 115 baseball seasons ago. Since the first five members inducted in 1936, 217 more members have been welcomed into this exclusive hall, leading to questions of how exclusive this hall actually is. Due to the nature of different eras and rule changes over the years, statistics of players who have played in different eras cannot be directly compared. Players' statistics have to be normalized using the overall league performance each year as a base. Once this is done, weights are assigned to significant statistical categories to determine a HoF value for each player using regression. Various comparison methods are then used to compare the HoF values of newer inductees with the HoF values of the Hall of Famers. Majorization will be a tool used to compare the normalized statistics of newer inductees with the Hall of Fame standard.
