Brief Bio

Erin spent her childhood in Plymouth, Massachusetts. She graduated from Plymouth North High School, and later went on to Swarthmore College. Currently, Erin is pursuing an honors major in biology, with a focus in developmental biology, and a course major/honors minor in mathematics. She hopes to synthesize these two aspects of her academic career by going on to graduate school.

Question & Answer

What was your favorite math experience?
At Swarthmore, I found the Complex Analysis seminar, taught by Professor Janet Talvacchia, to be spectacular. I had had a difficult time in Real Analysis, but pursuing that topic (albeit with the complex numbers), helped me to better understand and feel more comfortable using the techniques acquired in my previous courses.
What do you hope to be doing next year this time?
Next year, I hope to be attending a biology program in graduate school, with a research focus in developmental biology. Although I will be continuing in the field of biology, I also hope to incorporate my mathematical background into my studies, possibly by further looking into modeling techniques.
What advice would you give freshman and sophomores considering majoring in mathematics and statistics?
The best math advice that was handed down to me was to never be afraid of looking like a fool. I think that oftentimes, higher level math courses are intimidating on many different levels. Don’t be afraid of seeking out help during professors’ office hours, and don’t shy away from asking questions in class. Also remember that your classmates, although they may seem to be naturally talented in math, probably feel as lost or confused as you do at times.
